Playa Rincón.
Kilometers of white sand, palm shade, fresh fish on the beach and a cold river at the end. How to get there from Las Galeras, and what to expect.
The long, lazy beach day.
Playa Rincón is the big one: a long curve of white sand and coconut palms along Rincón Bay, backed by green hills, a short drive west of Las Galeras. It is often listed among the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, and it still feels wild. There are no big hotels, just sand, palms, a few beach shacks and plenty of room.
At the western end, the cold, clear Caño Frío river flows into the sea. Swim in the bay, then cool off in fresh water a few steps away.

Getting to Playa Rincón.
By road
Rincón is too far to walk from town. Take a taxi, a motoconcho or your own car along the road out of Las Galeras, then the access road down to the beach. Depending on the vehicle and road conditions, plan on roughly 30 to 50 minutes. The last stretch can be rough after rain, so ask locally before driving it yourself.
By boat
Boats also run from the town beach in Las Galeras around the coast to Rincón. It is a scenic way to arrive, and some trips combine Rincón with other beaches. Agree on the price, what’s included and your pickup time before you leave.
If you take a taxi, agree on the return time and price at the start. Phone signal at the beach can be unreliable.
What to expect.
- Food: informal shacks on the sand serve fresh fish, often with rice, tostones and salad. Ask the price first.
- Chairs and shade: palms give natural shade. Vendors sometimes rent chairs.
- The river: Caño Frío is at the western end. It is a short walk along the sand, cold and refreshing.
- Swimming: one side of the bay is usually calmer than the other. There are no lifeguards, so watch the conditions.
- Cash: bring Dominican pesos in small bills. There are no ATMs at the beach.
