The road to
Las Galeras.
Airports, drive times, buses and private transfers: how to get to the end of the Samaná Peninsula without the stress.
Worth the journey.
Las Galeras is at the far eastern tip of the Samaná Peninsula, at the end of the road. That is a big part of its charm, but it means you should plan the trip in advance, especially if you land late or travel with luggage.
Most visitors fly into Santo Domingo (SDQ) and drive about three hours. If you can get a flight into Samaná El Catey (AZS), the drive is much shorter.
Which airport is closest?
| Airport | Approx. drive to Las Galeras | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Samaná El Catey (AZS) | About 1 to 1½ hours | Closest airport. Mostly seasonal flights from Canada and Europe. |
| Santo Domingo Las Américas (SDQ) | About 3 hours | Most flight options. Direct highway north (Autopista del Nordeste). Rush hour can add time. |
| Puerto Plata (POP) | About 4 to 5 hours | Useful if you are combining the north coast with Samaná. |
| Punta Cana (PUJ) | About 5 hours or more | Long by road. Some travelers cross Samaná Bay by boat from the Sabana de la Mar / Miches side instead; check current schedules. |
Times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and stops. Allow extra time if you arrive after dark.
Private transfer: the easiest way.
A private driver meets you at arrivals and takes you straight to your door in Las Galeras, with no bus changes. It is the most practical option for families, groups and anyone landing in the evening.
- Agree the price, vehicle size and luggage space before you travel.
- Share your flight number so the driver can track delays.
- Ask whether highway tolls are included.
We work with a local, English- and Spanish-speaking driver: Orbis Taxi offers airport transfers and private rides around the Dominican Republic, with quotes by email or WhatsApp.
Rental car.
From Santo Domingo, take the Autopista del Nordeste north to the peninsula, continue to Santa Bárbara de Samaná (Samaná town) and then follow the coastal road east to Las Galeras. The route is straightforward, with no complicated junctions after Samaná town.
- Tolls: the highway has several toll stations. Carry Dominican pesos in small bills.
- Road conditions: the last stretch to Las Galeras can have potholes. Drive the access roads to remote beaches, like Rincón, carefully after rain.
- Night driving: try to arrive before dark. Watch for motorbikes, animals and unlit roads.
Bus and guagua.
The budget route. Bus companies including Caribe Tours run from Santo Domingo to Samaná town several times a day (roughly 2½ to 3 hours). In Samaná town, switch to a guagua (local minibus) to Las Galeras, which takes about an hour. Guaguas generally run from morning until early evening, so don’t arrive in Samaná late.
From SDQ airport, you will first need a taxi to the bus terminal in Santo Domingo. With heavy luggage, a private transfer is usually worth the difference.
Getting around Las Galeras.

- On foot: the town, Playa Grande and La Playita are all walkable.
- Motoconchos: motorbike taxis go almost anywhere. Agree on the price before you get on.
- Taxis and private drivers: best for Playa Rincón, the trailheads to Frontón and Madama, and day trips.
- Boats: boat trips to the remote beaches leave from the town beach.
